Hello, my name is Alex Ruch. Welcome to my website!
Tomorrow marks the start of a new year — one that will bring many opportunities with it. To seize a few of them early on, and to further my skills as a scholar (after all, writing and dissemination are the name of the game), I've begun this website and blog. Across these two platforms, I'll share materials and discuss research, politics, and news on the things I study: morality, social movements, health, and food. What links these topics, at least in how I study them, is that they're often embedded in conflicts between science and culture. While I'll be taking a critical yet pragmatic perspective to tease apart and resynthesize these issues here, I'll be sure to sprinkle some humor in occasionally to lighten up the mood. Beyond these topics, I'll also discuss the practice of research and professionalization, including my successes and struggles. If you have any advice or similar concerns, I'd love to hear from you! Let's learn together.
As you may have noticed, since this site is new, it's somewhat stark and skeletal. While I'll be updating it weekly, you can always find my most recent thoughts and activity in the Twitter bar along the right-hand side of this page (and by following me @Eat_Drink_Think). To receive weekly updates about my blog by email, use the subscription form in the upper right-hand corner of this page. Other ways of following my work are found on my research page.
In the next post, I will talk a bit about what it is that I do and how I came to do it. How did I go from having an interest in medicine, to studying sociology, then public health, and finally (perhaps) sociology again? (For a summary, you can read about my background on my About Me page.) Until then, thanks for visiting my site and for reading this post. I hope that you find some of what I've posted to be useful or interesting, and that you'll come back to see it all develop.
Happy New Year!
